The Raven

A summer weekend telling

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I am deep into my work on the exhibition American Underland at the Archer Gallery in Vancouver, Washington. I had hoped to be more regular with these stories this summer. My friend Becca Kennedy suggested I record these instead of write them. This is an early attempt. They will get better in coming weeks. “The Raven” is one of the lesser known Grimm stories. It is so rich with mythic resonance. It is a story that could be stretched out much further than what is here.

I told this to the bees in my backyard.

If you have time, listen to the story and then try some of these drawing exercises. Post them on The Whole Live Animal in the coming weeks. This one is on the house. The next stories will be for paid subscribers.

  1. What five images emerge first after listening? Don’t question them or analyze them. Draw all five. Give yourself 2 minutes per drawing.

  2. Where do you find yourself in the story? Are you the Raven, the young man, the queen? Draw yourself through that lens. Do that in five minutes

  3. Who are you not in the story. Draw yourself as that character. Spend more time on this one. Ten m minutes

  4. When in your life did you fall asleep because you ate the food you weren’t supposed to? Have you found Stromberg castle yet? When did you send your child to the ravens? Write down these times. Don’t overthink. Ten minutes.

  5. Finally taking all of these drawings and words draw one drawing. Let the images speak first. Post these if you want.

The Whole Live Animal is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
